Charlie Bird: The Best Bird Ever is a book pet lovers can appreciate. The author, Linda Bird, modeled the character of Charlie Bird after her own pet parrot. Much of the tale is about the little habits and eccentricities of a parrot and how this particular bird interacts with two children, Sara and Molly. If you've ever been regaled with stories of amazing pets and enjoyed it, this is definitely the book for you. The resident eight-year-old reviewer, who watches Animal Planet religiously, loved this book.
Beyond the daily habits of a Jenday Conure parrot, Charlie Bird is also an adventure. Charlie spends his days watching a flock of wild birds frolic outside his window. One of the wild birds longs to discover the comforts of domesticated life, while Charlie wants to experience the life of a free bird. (I have the incredible urge to hold up a lighter here.) The two birds communicate and devise a plan to switch places, to some surprising results.
While my son did not like the idea of photographs as illustrations in another book of fiction, he was enthralled with the photographs of Charlie Bird. The photos added a great deal to the learning experience, and I can imagine this book gracing the literature shelves of a pet store. I would definitely suggest it to any child pining for a pet bird. It makes a great introduction to the care required for the species. I did have a problem with the lack of editing. There were several grammatical errors, and since this book is intended for children who would be reading it to themselves as opposed to a passive audience, I feel like the editing should be a bit sharper. It is also printed in an unconventional format for a chapter book. It is a large, 9 1/2" X 12" paperback book. The format did not dissuade my son from enjoying the book, however, and the story proved it's ability to thoroughly entertain the reader. Charlie Bird: The Best Bird Ever is a colorful, heartwarming story that children aged nine to twelve will definitely enjoy.
