From childhood, Melissa Van Rossum has had the ability to see ghosts. Beings in limbo, avoiding transition into the afterlife for whatever reason, attach themselves to Van Rossum with regularity. These days, she uses skills taught by Native American shaman Raymon Grace to guide these spirits into the next realm, though she did not always embrace her gift so enthusiastically.
Their Way Home, Van Rossum's second book, is a diary of some of her ethereal encounters. It reaches back to a time when she was not quite sure how to approach these visitors. The chapters are written much like journal entries, exploring Rossum's feelings about given situations. She is unapologetic about her inability to guide the spirits in the beginning, before she recognized the power of her psychic abilities. She is forthright about the fear she felt in the presence of some darker spirits.
Because of the author's inexperience during her first encounters, she didn't take any action to guide the spirits. Unfortunately, this leaves some of the stories at the outset of the book feeling unfinished. She chronicles how particular spirits entered her life and the impressions she received from them, but then the stories drop off, with endings like "I haven't seen him since." She builds up to fear or sorrow she felt for a particular entity, reaches the climax, and stops. The reader is left wondering who the spirit was or what their intentions were. As she grows more experienced and begins to aid the ghosts in their journeys, the stories begin to gather closure and become more fulfilling.
Their Way Home is most beneficial to the reader in that we recognize psychics have special abilities, but we rarely get to see things from their perspective. Van Rossum provides that perspective. The reader sees the spirits as she sees them. It is an insider's view into the psychic realm.
Rossum's first book, All You've Ever Known, is a guide to heightening your intuition. Her website offers a free email subscription to intuition-developing tips and further stories of Rossum's spiritual encounters. She has developed a system called TruAwareness for reaching higher levels of intuition. She also maintains a blog. Overall, it looks as if she has a pretty comprehensive system for developing natural psychic abilities.
